Zambia

Children across Africa love playing ball games, yet they don't have real balls to play with. Unemployment and high HIV rates are also generic issues. With this is mind, and with the success of Alive & Kicking Kenya, A&K Zambia was set up in 2007 . Situated in Zambia's capital city, Lusaka, 50 stitchers paid a decent wage produce over 2,000 balls a month. We are lucky enough to have the support of Zamleather, a subsidiary of Zambeef, which gives us space on their tannery site for us to operate.

Alive & Kicking Zambia has produced and distributed over 30,000 balls since production started. Supporters who have sponsored balls include DHL, MTN, Coca Cola, Camfed, RAPIDS, Zambian Malaria Foundation, Zambeef Plc, Zamleather, Good Gifts and lots of individual donors. As well as giving balls to children through donations, we also retail the balls at not-for-profit prices at Zambia's two biggest retail outlets, Spar and Shoprite.

A&K Zambia balls are all printed with HIV/AIDS and malaria messages, with the aim of catching the attention of young people. To supplement the messaging on our balls Alive & Kicking Zambia's team regularly organise football tournaments to raise health awareness. Following in Kenya's footsteps, Alive & Kicking Zambia is currently producing HIV/AIDS health awareness posters for distribution to secondary schools.
